Quentin Tarantino has made his war movie. Every great director has one Speilberg, Malick, Kubrick, Woo, Stone, and Coppola i am sure their is more and i am sure they are all gritty parables of life, death and the high price of waging war. Tarantino to his credit has made a completely original war movie more accurately Tarantino has created a new sub-genre: war fantasy. It opens with the evil wizard (Nazi) destroying the family and life of the beautiful princess (Jewish girl) and setting in motion a very fantastic tale indeed, were a group of knights ( the Inglorious Bastards) led by their king (Brad Pitt) set out to right the wrongs in the land (France). And that is the spoiler free basic plot of what is the best movie i have seen this year there will be other movies made this year that are good and there our films that i have seen that are exceptional( Public Enemies, Ponyo, District 9, Blood: The Last Vampire, and others i am sure) but none of them are the best, none of them are Quentin Tarantinos Inglorious Bastards. As of late my faith in Tarantino has been waning Death Proof was to much talk, Kill Bill for all its fun pretty much ripped off a whole helluva alot of movies in the name of homage so when i heard of Inglorious Bastards i was skeptical. Where oh where did the originality of his first films/screenplay go? Then i heard it the speech you know what I'm talking about the speech that's heard through out the preview to this movie it gave me goose bumps-it gave me hope. And i was not disappointed this movie has done for me what few movies have done and that is surprise me. With a plot and concept that in the hands of a lesser talent would have fallen into the land of camp a truly original piece of genre film making has emerged. War, fantasy, propaganda genre may be to long a name for a categorical title but that's what this is. Laced with beautiful compositions and the bravest sound track I've ever heard this is a movie going experiance. My only complaint is the subtitles run at the speed of Tarantino speech and can be a bit of a challenge to keep up with but such a minor complaint is absurd when dealing with this movie as a whole. The acting spot on Brad Pitt gnarly, all-American, bad assery, the bad guy (can't remember the actors name) a sublime piece of work the actor who plays this slick, little piece of evil deserves every award available to him just for the opening scene alone and of course there is more so much more that i want to scream at the top of my lungs about the awesomeness of certain scenes but i wouldn't dare ruin the movie for you. So get your pocket change out and drive to the theater and watch a film by a man who still believes in taking chances you won't be disappointed! |
